The beauty of the crater lakes region of Eastern Flores – 5 day 4 night tour

This tour will show you many aspects about the crater lakes region of Eastern Flores populated by the Lio peoples. Without doubt the dawn lakes experience on a clear day is the pinnacle experience; however you will see much more and meet many local people. You will see weaving villages, village multi crop agricultural systems and fabulous scenery.

Day 1. You will arrive either at Ende airport (from Labuan Bajo) or Maumere (direct from Bali) where you will be picked up by our driver and guide. From Ende, you will drive into the mountains through valleys and forested areas, past villages with rice fields stopping at a market to the lodge. from Maumere, you will drive through different scenery past the sea and on into the mountains. During these drives, you can stop the driver at any time. You will arrive at the Lodge in good time for a rest before dinner.

Day 2. This  is a very early start at 0430 to view the lakes at dawn. After a cup of tea or coffee, you will drive by vehicle to the park (around 17km) and walk through the early morning mist to the lakes hoping to hear some of the 17 known songs of the Bare Throated Whistler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVY-C1UwlGs). As the sun comes up, it will be magic on a clear day. After a coffee and at your leisure, you will trek back to the lodge via villages and seeing local agricultural systems. You will have great views of the surrounding countryside. After lunch and short siesta, there will be a short birding walk in the areas around the lodge.

Day 3. This all day trip shows you scenery, weaving, culture and villages. After breakfast you will trek to the village of Jopu (6km). En route you will see different farming crop systems and birds; also weavers especially at Jopu where you will have local coffee. From Jopu you will take a car to Ngela traditional village and see also its Ikat weavers and dyers, with a magnificent view overlooking the ocean. You will have lunch at Ngela, which is considered traditional village in the area. You will learn about local weaving practices, the meaning of motifs in the culture and many other facts about village life of the Lio people. After a picnic lunch, you will return to the Lodge via the large village of Wolowaru. This tour will give you a good understanding of the problems and lives of the Lio people and a good introduction to the art of ikat weaving.

Day 4. On this day, you may wish to relax in the area around this beautiful lodge set in a valley neat Moni; or you can go trekking in the morning in the area around the village of Moni returning to the lodge for lunch. After a siesta, you can take a drive to areas with hot springs and a waterfall. Back to the lodge for dinner.

Day 5. Normally this tour is undertaken en route to Ende airport for an afternoon flight to Labuan Bajo or Denpasar. You leave at 0800.  First a visit to a hilltop traditional village at Saga where you will see and meet with local people.  You then continue to Ende, driving down the spectacular coast with its black beaches to an impregnable traditional house in a village, Wonotobo, high above the ocean. Arriving in Ende, you visit the house of exile of Sukarno, Indonesia’s first President and father of the country. Lunch, then go to airport. During this tour you will get a feeling for the remoteness of some villages in the mountains, the beauty of Flores and study a bit of Indonesian history. If you are exiting via Maumere, an alternative tour will be offered.
