ART ADVENTURE IN FLORES June 7th – 14th 2014.

This tour is for anyone interested in any aspect of art. Beginners are most welcome. We will sketch, paint, photograph, and print views, people, flowers, plants, ikat designs or anything else that takes your fancy. You will see beautiful weavings, meet the Lio people, see part of their culture and relax in a mountain environment.
Day 1. Arrival in Bali – Udayana Kingfisher Eco Lodge Participants Arriving at Ngurah Rai International Airport will be met by one of our senior staff for transportation to the lodge for welcome and briefing. Depending on arrival time, you can relax at the lodge, go for a birding visit to the Settling Ponds or visit the Uluwatu Temple and see the famous Kecak dance. Over dinner and afterwards, you will be briefed by the Tour Leader and Artist in House on all aspects of the tour.
Day 2. Eastwards to the island of Flores – Kelimutu Crater Lakes Eco Lodge Breakfast will be early after which you will return to the airport for the flight to Ende via Labuan Bajo. The flight is normally via Labuan Bajo (gateway to the Komodo islands). You will pass over the Wallace line (between the islands of Bali and Lombok) into the dry tropics and Australasia into a different world of tropical islands, coral reefs and volcanoes. Arriving Ende late morning, you will be picked by our staff and driven the 90 minutes to the lodge through a winding and scenic road in the mountains. After a siesta, the equipment for the tour will be reviewed and sketching starts in the environes of the lodge and the gardens.
Day 3. Kelimutu Crater Lakes A very early start at 0430, a cup of coffee and then up Kelimutu mountain to the fabulous crater lakes of different colours. The aim is to arrive just before dawn and see the lakes at this time. This is normally a magic time with the clouds swirling over the craters in a sea of colour. You will spend most of the day in this area with breakfast, coffees and lunch being brought to you. One of the spectcular features ;of the area are the large number of Barethroated Whistlers, a bird with 17 songs, found in the surrounding forests. You can hear some of these songs in Newsletter 12 found on the main page of the Ecolodgesindonesia website. On return to the Lodge, after a short siesta, there will be the first of short print workshops with practicals.
Day 4. Traditional village and weavers After breakfast, the day will be spent at a nearby traditional village where women weavers supported by Ecolodgesindonesia will demonstrate all aspects of their art. Some of the ikat weaving of the Lio people are amongst the best in the Eastern islands. You will meet many people and have the opportunity to sketch and paint them. Lunch will be taken in the village.
After dinner, the famous local “clicking” or “jumping” dance will be seen performed by orphans and widows of the local community. A chance to support them by purchasing their ikat weavings will also be presented.
Day 5. Local markets and school visit After breakfast, you will visit a local market and be able to sketch or photograph many different types of scene. The markets are both a social and business scene for people coming from many parts of the area. They will show a great interest in your activities and many opportunities will arise to paint. During the day, a local school will be visited where, demonstrations of some of the work on the tour will be shown and discussed with local children.
Day 6. Winding up The day will be spent around the lodge finishing your work or following up on parts of the tour. The Tour Leader will be available all day to help.
Day 7. Back to Bali After a leisurely breakfast, you will depart for Ende visiting the main attractions of the town including the house of the first President of Indonesia, Sukarno. You will take the afternoon plane to Bali and a final dinner at Udayana Kingfisher Eco Lodge.
